Palestinian boy assaulted by Settlers in Tel Rumeida

Videos: Hani Abu Haykal, Issa Amro (B´Tselem field worker)

Jamil is the 14 year old son of one of EAPPI´s treasured local contacts, Hani Abu Haykal. The family lives close to Tel Rumeida settlement and has suffered several assaults in the past. In December 2008, settlers burned down Hani´s car, parked only 20 metres from an IDF outpost (http://www.ynetnews.com/Ext/Comp/ArticleLayout/CdaArticlePrintPreview/1,2506,L-3385203,00.html). Inspite of having been the target of severe violence repeatedly, Hani has been involved in the non-violence movement in Hebron from the very beginning.

According to EAPPI local contact Badia Dweik, Jamil was followed by Israeli soldiers on his way home. Hi was arrested and taken to Tel Rumeida settlement, where some settlers started hitting him, without being stopped by the soldiers. Hani Abu Haykal, Jamil´s father and Issa Amro, B´Tselem field worker were able to film part of the situation. Most of what is being said is in Hebrew and Arabic, I will try to get a translation, but the movies are speaking a rather clear language as it is.

Ma'an news agency reported about the event:

  1. Thank you for this update on Hebron and the Abu Haykal family. I've just completed my term in Hebron as an EA in group 31. Jamil is a good friend of mine so this news saddens me deeply. Keep up the good work.
